Drain The Swamp—In Irvine Too!

When Donald Trump was a candidate for President, one of his campaign promises was to “drain the swamp” in Washington, D.C.  This, of course, was a reference to ridding Washington of the human (some would say sub-human) “creatures” which comprised the federal government bureaucracy.

While this is a laudable objective, it is probably an unattainable one, because the bureaucracy is so deeply entrenched and the extent of government corruption so pervasive.  And new swamp “creatures” would undoubtedly come along to replace the old ones anyway.

Closer to home, however, in Irvine (CA), the largest city in South Orange County, the swamp creatures are also alive and well, and just as evil, albeit on a smaller scale.  Here, a three-member Irvine City Council majority (Donald Wagner, Christina Shea, and Melissa Fox—the “fox” is literally in the hen house now) has predictably voted to give away a 125-acre  “Great Park” site (valued at an estimated $500 million) to developer Five Point Communities.  This site has previously been designated (and approved) for a Veterans Memorial Park and Cemetery.

Not only is this a slap-in-the-face to the residents of Irvine, but even worse, a slap-in-the-face to American veterans who fought and died for our country.  Further, while the so-called “Great Park” is technically within the City of Irvine, this land giveaway is a betrayal of all the people in South Orange County who overwhelmingly voted some two decades ago to stop a commercial airport at El Toro.  We were promised a “Great Park” (i.e., open space)–not tens of thousands of homes, condos, apartments, and commercial buildings that will eventually create eternal gridlock on our streets and highways.  Talk about “BAIT and SWITCH”!

It is time for the residents of Irvine to see how much this three-member Irvine City Council majority has received from Five Point Communities—both above and under the table!  It is time for the residents of Irvine to initiate recall proceedings against the three Irvine City Council members who have betrayed their trust and betrayed the people of South Orange County.  It is time to drain the swamp in Irvine!

The Honorable Eddie Rose

Former Laguna Niguel (CA) City Councilman
